#23 and the Brick "Front"

#23 - Breakfast Bar

Even though it's just a very small part of our house, I really like the breakfast bar.  I don't know how often I'll personally sit there, but I can envision friends sitting there and chatting while I cook or clean up, or future children sitting there while they eat their breakfast, or people sitting and chatting while we have a gathering.  I think it will be a great space.  I've been looking online at bar stools.  I'm not sure if I want to the same stool in different sizes for the island and breakfast bar, or if I want to do something different for each.  I've seen some I like at JC Penny online and a couple of other stores.  Yet another decision I have to make!

Aside from the pantry, there was one other thing that bothered me when I visited the other day.  I can't believe I didn't notice this on any other houses in our plan!   Take a look at our brick front.

Not bad, right?  The brick looks good.  But Ryan took "front" very literally - it is JUST the front.  Take a look at the garage wall side of the porch.

Siding?   Technically I guess it's not the front of the house, but really?  For $6,300 I was expecting a totally finished job.  But like I said I never noticed it before.  The model home is the same way.  It was my fault for not noticing and asking if we could get that in brick, too.  If I would have known this is how it would look,  I would have asked if we could do a non-standard upgrade. Maybe it wouldn't look so bad if our siding was darker.  I'm still not liking the color of the siding, but my husband does.  I'm glad one of us likes it.  Of course, this doesn't bother him and he thinks I'm being picky again.  Maybe I am.  Regardless, I am still very happy with the house.  Hopefully, I'll grow to like it :)

To balance things out I should tell you about another pleasant surprise, too.  I didn't even think that these would be included.  We have shower curtain rods in the bathrooms.  I just figured I'd have to buy them.  When we change our faucets to brushed nickel, we'll do the same with the towel bars and shower curtain rod.  For now though, these rods will be fine.  I can put that money towards something else!

  1. I am shocked that little wall is siding and not brick. Will keep that in mind when we go over the detailed plans in a couple of weeks for ours. Because we have a corner lot the requirements for the development we have to have a stone or brick watertable on the side facing the side street if you have a brick or stone front. Because we liked the look we are also doing it on the side of the house that has the solarium.

  2. The does seem weird that they wouldn't do that little spot brick too. It looks ok though.

  4. BD, what does a stone or brick watertable mean?
Thanks, Jen. It will be fine, but I would have much rather been given the option of having it finished in brick. How much could it cost to do that tiny little area? Heck, even if took the price up to $7,000 we would have done it. Oh well.
India, you are right about the barstools. I think the come in 24 and 30 inches. I'm just trying to decide if I want them all to be the same or if I want the morning room chairs to be different.
We didn't upgrade the faucets, so since they are crome, everything else is crome. Did brushed nickel come standard for you? Replacing the faucets, especially downstairs, is one of my first priorities. I collected several Home Depot for my birthday and Christmas, so I'm hoping to use them for at least one faucet.

  7. Your kitchen is the exact set up that ours is in the Zachary model. We have yet to figure out what we want to do for barstools on the breakfast bar but did get one barstool for the island at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It isn't a nice quality that I want and will upgrade to something better down the road but it does give one of us a place to sit or a place to put our toddler when he wants to snack and I'm doing something in the kitchen. Like you said I think the breakfast bar will be used a lot more down the road when kids are bigger or for entertainment.

  8. The watertable is a section that is brick or stone from the ground up about 3 feet. It gets it's name because it is a way to deflect water running down the side of a building away from the foundation. In our case it just dresses up the side of the house so it isn't all siding.

  10. We also get satin nickel as a standard. My guess is this is because I want oil rubbed bronze. lol
